Script Editing & Development

Comedy | Sitcom | Radio | Film | TVScript Editing & Creative ConsultancyI offer development support as a script editor and creative consultant for writers and performers working across stage, radio, film and television.I’m a problem-solver who loves helping writers unlock what isn’t working in their scripts and creative projects, whether that’s a structural knot, a character that’s feeling flat, or a joke that isn’t landing yet.My approach is grounded in character, structure and comic clarity. I focus on helping writers strengthen their voice, sharpen the comedy through making sure it’s aligned with their characters point of view, and develop scripts that are ready for submission, development or production.Alongside my work as a writer and director, I’ve worked across film and television production and post-production, so my notes are informed by how scripts are developed, produced and ultimately realised on screen.I work with writers at all stages, from early drafts through to final polishes ahead of a pitch or submission. What I can help with:- Structural notes and redrafts- Character development and point of view-Sitcom and series development-Comedy clarity and joke work rooted in character- Development notes for broadcasters, producers and theatres- Feedback on radio, TV, film and stage comedy scriptsMy feedback is practical, clear aimed at helping you move the script forward while keeping it recognisably yours.I will read your script and then discuss notes with you through a one to one online or on the phone.I’m happy to work with projects at any stage, from early drafts through to submission ready scripts. If you’d like to discuss a project, feel free to get in touch via the contact form with a short description of your script.

Live Shows

Alongside script development, I also direct and provide creative consultancy on live comedy shows.I’ve worked with performers on multiple Edinburgh Festival shows that have gone on to have multiple sell-out runs at Soho Theatre, as well as national and international tours, and have been nominated for Best Newcomer and won Fringe First awards.I enjoy collaborating closely with live acts, whether that’s developing a show over time or troubleshooting specific issues in focused, one-off sessions. My role is to help clarify what the show is, strengthen its core idea, and make sure the strongest material is front and centre. My approach is rooted in identifying the underlying theme or story of a show and using that as a lens to assess what’s working, what isn’t, and where energy or clarity is being lost. I act as an outside eye for both the performer and the audience, keeping the audience experience firmly in mind while championing the performer’s voice and instincts.I also bring visual thinking into the process, including how props, staging, costume, lighting and poster concepts can support and sharpen the identity of a show, both creatively and in how it’s presented to an audience. If you have a live show you’d like to develop, refine or sense-check, feel free to get in touch via the contact form.

Testimonials

"I worked with Miranda for the first time on Joz Noris's critically acclaimed show You Wait, Time Passes. Her notes were intelligent, incisive and precise. She brings a rigour to both the visuals and the text - and is also very funny. The show was much better for her involvement. She later assisted me in beating out the plot for a theatrical adaptation of a book - and was absolutely brilliant. Miranda was the perfect collaborator - always ready with ideas, questions, provocations and encouragement. I'd work with her again in a heartbeat."Jon Brittain - Olivier Award-winning playwright, comedy writer & director.

We LOVE Miranda. We worked with her on our live show ‘The Origin of Love’ and she was such an essential part of it all (in so many ways- dramaturgy, direction, BIG story brain, visual consultant!).Her notes from early in the process helped shape the way we thought about the show. Her ideas are electric, (her brain is so fast!) and has such a strong grasp of storytelling in comedy. She really knows how to escalate a stupid idea to its wonderful extreme. She’s not afraid of complexity and helped us find ways for our show to say more, encouraging us to be brave and delve deeper into the themes. She believes in people and their ideas fully, so you always feel supported. A total joy to work with!We love Miranda!Ada Player & Bron Waugh - BAFTA Nominated Writer / Performers, and Nominated for Edinburgh Fringe Best Newcomer Comedy Award with Origin Of Love

“Miranda’s years of experience with live comedy and film making, as a screenwriter and director, means she has an invaluable perspective on a script and what a writer is trying to say. Her experience is also incredibly helpful for giving astute and practical guidance when it comes to moving a script into production. “Nat Luurtsema - Bafta nominated Screenwriter & Director

I've worked with Miranda on projects across a variety of mediums - live shows, radio sitcoms, short films - and all of them would have been a shadow of themselves if it weren't for her input.
She has such an incredible grasp of story and can help you get a far better sense of what your project looks like from the outside looking in.
She's got a great eye for imaginative, silly ideas that will help punch up a project, and a great understanding of comedy that's rooted in character and persona, resulting in work that feels coherent, consistent and with a really strong voice. She's also ceaselessly focused on going the extra mile in terms of art design, costuming, look and feel - never again will I ever accept "Good enough" as being good enough for any project.Miranda has helped me to understand how important it is to consider all aspects of what an idea looks, sounds and feels like to an audience and to never compromise on what I can do to really sell it to them. She is a phenomenal collaborator and every piece of work benefits from her amazing insight.Joz Norris - Writer / Performer - Winner of the Comedians' Choice & Leicester Comedy Festival Best Show awards

Miranda Holms is a phenomenaly creative director, a brilliant script editor and has a wicked sense of humour.I feel lucky every time I get to make stage work with her because I always have such a fun time and, crucially, the result is always so much stronger with her than without. She brings her A game every day, is a joy to be around, has great ideas and the talent to realise them. She also gives plenty of space for collaborators to be involved but has great judgement when a firm direction needs to be taken.Listen to her - she is brilliant and will make your work better!”Ben Target - Comedian & Writer / Performer - Fringe First Award Winner

Eggbox

Eggbox is a comedy short film and live script-reading night that I co-run with Joz Norris. We created it as a comedy-first space to champion emerging and established writers and filmmakers, and to foster collaboration within the community creating new work. Each night features a curated mix of comedy short films and live script readings performed by a cast of comedy actors, giving writers and directors the opportunity to see their work in front of an audience and connect with others working across stage, radio, film and television. Our aim is to provide a platform where bold, character-driven comedy can be tested, refined and celebrated - particularly at a time when there are limited opportunities for comedy writers to try new scripts in front of a live audience.Previous contributors have included Luke McQueen, Sam Campbell, Jazz Emu, Sam O’Leary, Tom Lawrinson, Ada Player, Bron Waugh, Arabella Weir, Lola-Rose Maxwell, Nat Luurtsema, Bec Hill, Katie Norris, Sunil Patel, Kiell Smith-Bynoe and Joe Kent-Walters, among many others.Writers and filmmakers interested in submitting work can get in touch at:
